Mating Calls
The purpose of Mating Calls is to draw parallels
between the peculiar
behaviors both animals
and people display when trying to attract mates.
In
particular, Mating Calls focuses on first
impressions made in the online
dating world.
Mating Calls was created using crowd sourcing
to pull pieces of
information together into a
unified project. Participant "submissions" were
collected from the dating
app
Hinge. The
information taken from each
dating profile
was the initial prompt answer displayed, repre-
senting the
individual's attempt at a good first
impression. Contributors did not know
directly
that they were contributing to this project.
However, Mating
Calls considers how these
men were, in a way, willing participants by
sign-
ing up on the dating app and creating profiles
to impress "mates."
The individual responses were assembled in a
jumbled cluster on a web page
to signify the
overwhleming abundance of people looking for
love online.
Each image was given an absolute
position on the page and a blurred
original state.
Images were blurred in order to entice viewers
to hover
over the images, which reveals the text.
This not only adds an element of
surprise, but
also mimics the functioning of most dating
apps where you
can only view one "suitor" at
a time.
